Why You Need to Hike the Fishhook Creek Trail

The Sawtooth Mountains are full of wild and wonderful experiences. But while most may think that our region is only for serious adventurers, that’s where they are wrong. Our Central Idaho oasis is an incredible family destination, and hiking the Fishhook Creek Trail is just one of the activities you can enjoy with everyone!

Planning a Hike to Fishhook Creek Trail

How to Get to the Trailhead

Fishhook Creek Trail is near our Redfish Lake Lodge property. There is parking available at the trailhead, but our guests can ride the Redfish Shuttle for free to and from Triangle C Cabins. This is an excellent option for those wanting to explore the hiking trails and activities at the lodge.

Fishhook Creek Trail Details

The Fishhook Creek Trail begins at the Redfish Trailhead. Look for a dirt parking lot about a half-mile before you reach the Redfish Lake Lodge. You can start your trek from there, traveling along Trail 186. The first stretch of the trail is not incredibly impressive, but once you get a mile into the hike, you will find yourself in a forest (you’ll see plenty of downed trees as well). It only takes about 45 minutes to reach “The Beaver Ponds” in Fishhook Creek Meadow.

We recommend bringing your camera, as the panoramic views of the streams and meadows with Mount Heyburn in the distance provides a fantastic photo opportunity. Unless you are an experienced hiker, this is where you will turn around and head back to the Redfish Lake Lodge for some food, drinks, and scenic views of the water!

Difficulty

Hiking the Fishhook Creek Trail is an easy activity for all ages and abilities. There is very little change in elevation, and the path is clear of rough terrain. It’s also only 2.5 miles each way, so you can easily complete a round trip in under two hours if walking at a leisurely pace. All in all, it’s a fantastic casual hike for the family.

Continue to Thompson Peak

If you want to continue your hike after reaching the end of the Fishhook Creek Trail, Thompson Peak offers a challenging journey. Check out our blog highlighting the trek for more information.

Make sure that you thoroughly research everything you need before embarking on this hike. We recommend taking a Sawtooth Mountain Guides trip for most hikers.
