Your Guide to Hiking the Alpine Meadows Trail

How to Get to the Trailhead

The Alpine Meadows Trail is a great way to get out and explore the Sawtooth wilderness if you’re enjoying a day at Alturas Lake. Travel south on Highway 76 for about 21 miles before taking a right onto Alturas Creek Trail for another six miles. There is a parking area next to the trailhead. All you have to do is lace up your hiking boots and hit the path!

Hiking the Alpine Meadows Trail

The Alpine Meadows Trail is a seven-mile out-and-back path that showcases the natural beauty of the Sawtooths. The trail weaves and winds through a beautiful scenic valley to the foot of a mountain leading with a network of small lakes. The entire journey takes you along Alpine Creek, which creates a tranquil atmosphere with the sounds of a babbling brook as the soundtrack to your hike. It may not have the “wow!” factor that some of the trails around Redfish Lake have, but it’s well worth a day excursion with your family.

Tip: Summer and fall are the best times to hike the Alpine Meadows Trail.

Trail Difficulty

The Alpine Meadows Trail is one of the best in the area if you want to enjoy a day hike with the entire family. The small change in altitude combined with the lack of challenging elements or rocky escarpments makes this appropriate for all ages and abilities. There is some off-trail hiking available, but casual hikers should not attempt to traverse those areas.
