About McGown Peak in Idaho

McGown Peak in Idaho is one of the most-loved spots to hike. Due to its easy accessibility and amazing views of Stanley Lake, it is on the top of the list for the best places to explore in the area. Located in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, the peak reaches 9,860 feet into the sky. The most popular times to hike here are between May and October; if you come during May or June, you will most likely still see snow!

Getting There

Start your journey by driving about 4.5 miles west of Stanley on Highway 21. Turn left onto Stanley Lake Road and drive about 4 miles until you reach the trailhead near the Inlet Campground.

Hiking the Peak

If you’d like to hike to McGown Peak, you can do so from the Alpine Way Trail. The trail starts near the Inlet Campground. The Alpine Way Trail is very easy to follow until you are about to reach the top. Here, it can be challenging, and you will have to traverse just below the ridge to the summit. If you would like to go all the way to the top, a pair of gloves comes in handy!

What to Bring

As with any hike in Central Idaho, there is a list of things you need to bring on your journey. The McGown Peak can be climbed in a day, so no overnight backpacking is necessary. However, you should always make sure you pack enough water and snacks since the Sawtooth Wilderness can be unpredictable. Make sure to wear proper shoes and pack layers since the temperature fluctuates throughout the day. Lastly, make sure you bring your camera! The McGown Peak is the most-photographed mountain in the Sawtooths, and you don’t want to miss the opportunity to snap the perfect picture.

Alpine Climb With Sawtooth Mountain Guides

Not only is McGown Peak one of the most popular spots to climb in the summer, it is also great to explore during the winter! Unless you have experience with snowy climbs, we recommend embarking with a guide like Sawtooth Mountain Guides. They will take you up the North Couloir, a steep snow climb that features 3rd and 4th class rock climbing. This snowy climb can be done in one day!
