Hikes at Redfish Lake
Redfish Lake in Stanley, Idaho is a wonderful destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and crystal-clear water. But did you know that Redfish Lake is also the starting point for several incredible Sawtooth hikes? From family-friendly excursions to backcountry adventures, Redfish Lake has something for everyone.
Redfish Trailhead
One of the most popular hikes from the Redfish Trailhead is the Fishhook Creek Trail. This four-mile hike follows Fishhook Creek through trees and lush meadows. Suitable for hikers of all ages, the trail offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and may even give you the chance to spot some of the local wildlife.
But the Fishhook Creek Trail is just the beginning of the hiking opportunities from the Redfish Trailhead. For the more adventurous, continue on to the Marshall Ridge and beyond. The ridge offers incredible views of the Sawtooth Mountains, and if you’re up for a challenge, you can continue on to several nearby peaks, including Thompson Peak, the highest peak in the range.
Redfish Inlet Trailhead
On the other side of the lake, which you can reach by boat shuttle or by hiking the 5-mile ridge line of the lake, you’ll find the Redfish Inlet Trailhead, home to several family-friendly hikes including the 1.5-mile (roundtrip) Lily Ponds and Waterfall trail or the 4-mile (roundtrip) hike to “Valley of the Giants”, an impressive boulder field with great views of the glacial valley.
For those seeking a more challenging hike, continue up the drainage to explore other backcountry lakes and peaks, including Saddle Back Lakes and Cramer Lakes, and many others, offering excellent fishing opportunities. If you’re up for a real adventure, you can even summit Grand Mogul Peak for a full view of Redfish Lake from above! Please note that these adventures should be preceded by careful study and instructions as many of the routes are unmarked, and many peaks require technical skills. The Sawtooth Mountain Guides are our favorite guides!
As with any hike, remember to come prepared for the steep and rugged trails, as well as unpredictable weather. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and warm layers, and always follow Leave No Trace principles to respect the natural environment.
